Middle School Math WebQuests

I am currently a substitute teacher at the middle school level, and I hope to some day get a full time position as a 7th or 8th grade math teacher, so I found WebQuests that relate to middle school math concepts. The following are a couple that I enjoyed.

Fraction Fixins:

  • This WebQuest covers both fractions and converting units in a creative way. These are both concepts that students struggle with, so using a real life application like cooking is very beneficial. The WebQuest is easy to follow and broken steps that students must complete each day. Expectations are also clear.
Shop 'Till You Drop: http://web.archive.org/web/20070806075937/http://www.manteno.k12.il.us/webquest/middle/Math/ShopTilDrop/webquest+shopping.html
  • What student doesn't like to shop? This WebQuest is a great way for students to learn about percents while learning about internet security. The design is engaging for students and easy to follow.

  1. Amanda: I taught 7th and 8th grade math AND language arts while I was in northern Virginia. I started out in language arts, then decided to change subjects in order to try out my other certification area of math. I used a recipe lesson in language arts that I then tweaked for math (both gave me opportunities to meet curriculum objectives) and recipes ARE a great way to teach ratios and proportions. I am actually thinking of this for either of my 811 assignments...using my recipe lesson. I mean, even though I did not get a teaching job when I moved back last year, I remain optimistic, so why not create things that I know I will use. Good luck on your end, as well!!
